Abiodun Blog Post

Meet Abiodun. She is the Community Liaison for the Family Resource Network Hub at CIWA.

Abiodun moved to Calgary from Nigeria in 2017. She was an early childhood educator and a high school teacher for over 7 years. She received the Inspirational Educator Award for her dedication in working with vulnerable youth.

Abiodun enrolled in CIWA’s Civic Engagement Program with the help of settlement and employment counsellors. She fell in love with CIWA’s work and immediately knew that she wanted to work in the organization. In July 2018, she started working at CIWA as a childcare worker and then became an Instructor for Links to Success. She also took on a Coordinator role for the Innovative Early Learning Project before moving into her current role as Community Liaison.

What I like most about my job is being able to meet and serve immigrants like myself. I like that I am able to successfully connect them to programs suited to their needs to help them integrate.”

Abiodun believes the biggest barrier immigrant women face is around mental health awareness and domestic violence. She is proud that CIWA’s programs and services create awareness around mental health. Promoting conversations about mental health and working to reduce the stigma attached to mental health concerns are valuable for the community.

“I enjoy working with immigrant women because I get a chance to meet, interact and learn from women from all walks of life. I understand and appreciate the strength it takes to adjust to a new culture and become successful. I also enjoy being able to provide guidance and support as they find their path in their new home.”

Outside of work, Abiodun enjoys travelling and spending time with friends and family. She loves spending time with her 3-year-old son, who keeps her very active and busy.
