Promising Practice Model for Gender-Based Violence Prevention and Support

Project Purpose

Our project strengthens Alberta’s gender-based violence sector while centering the needs of immigrant, refugee, and newcomer women. By addressing intersectional and post-pandemic challenges and reducing barriers related to language, rural access, and culture, we ensure safer and more inclusive communities.

Supportive Counselling Vision

Culturally sensitive, trauma-informed care empowering women through trust, flexibility, and compassion. Available in 13+ languages, sessions are free and accessible in-person, online, or off-site.

Core Components

  • Intake & Supportive Counselling Sessions: Standard templates, trained staff
  • Assessment Tools: Needs, risks, protective factors, safety planning
  • Online Supports: Exit button, Calendly booking, digital consent
  • Referral Protocols: Warm handoffs, emergency connection, follow-up

    Educational Workshops

    Family Life Topics: Healthy relationships, DV impact, family dynamics

    Wellness Topics: Anger management, self-care, communication, boundaries

          Group Support

  • 6–8 sessions, 8–12 participants
  • Support groups for women and men
  • Flexible hours, community-based delivery
  • Delivered in multiple languages
