Gerda R. Bloemraad Scholarship Fund now accepting applications

Gerda R. Bloemraad came to Canada from the Netherlands in 1975. A lawyer by profession, she went through typical integration challenges faced by a majority of newcomers to Canada. Along with improving her language proficiency and adjusting to cultural differences she had to go back to school before she could practice law in Canada. Shortly after her retirement, Gerda joined the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association in 2007, where she served as the President and Board Chair until early 2013. Gerda’s passion for the well- being of immigrant women in Calgary inspired her philanthropic engagement through this scholarship. She remains active and involved in the community and  a huge supporter of CIWA and its clients.

 

PURPOSE OF SCHOLARSHIP:

The scholarship provides financial support to a CIWA client or volunteer who wants to study at an accredited post-secondary institution. Two scholarships of $3000 will be awarded.

WHO CAN APPLY:

  • CIWA client or volunteer (past or present) between 18-30 years of age
  • Lived in Canada for less than 5 years
  • Demonstrate a financial need
  • Not received another CIWA scholarship in the past

HOW TO APPLY:

  1. Complete and sign the application form. Click here to download and fill the form
  2. Include a curriculum vitae or resume
  3. Submit a letter of reference, if shortlisted and upon request

SCHOLARSHIP CONDITIONS:

  • Scholarship is presented at CIWA Annual General Meeting in June
  • Candidate must be present at the event to receive the award
  • CIWA will need a confirmation of enrollment and original receipts to award the scholarship
  • All scholarship funds must be used within 12 months of receiving it
