Language & Literacy
Language Training provides language and literacy classes (from foundational literacy to CLB 4) to clients in order to help them achieve proficiency in English. Childcare is provided for our students’ children between the ages of 6 months to 6 years.
CIWA offers seven literacy classes in eight community locations through the Pebbles in the Sand Program.
CIWA also offers Language Instruction for Newcomers for immigrant women with Canadian Language Benchmarks between 1 and 4. Classes for newcomers with special needs are available.
In conjunction with other CIWA programs, SMILES (Small Multicultural Immigrants Learning Early Strategies), provides early childhood development, lifelong learning opportunities and quality childcare for immigrant and refugee children (aged six months to six years) while their mothers attend other CIWA programs. Qualified SMILES childcare workers provide children with culturally sensitive, age-appropriate developmental activities via a play-based curriculum to increase their school-readiness. Ultimately, the goal is to provide children with the tools needed to succeed in the mainstream Canadian school system.

“I learned that I am ready to take the challenges as they come. I am very happy that I could share my thoughts about being an immigrant in Canada. I learned a lot about working with my child at home with the support from my HV.”
