Born and raised in Toronto, Pauline Hoskin has lived a life rich in experience, both at home and abroad. Alongside her husband, she spent time living overseas and in various southern Alberta communities before settling in Calgary over a decade ago. With a remarkable 50-year career as a registered nurse and community educator, Pauline dedicated her professional life to caring for and empowering others.

After retiring in late 2019, Pauline found herself with extra time and a strong desire to continue contributing meaningfully to her community. By early 2020, just as COVID-19 restrictions began and many people were isolating at home,  she sought out safe and purposeful ways to stay engaged. That search led her to learn about volunteer opportunities with CIWA.

Pauline facilitates a group with the New Friends and Neighbourhood Groups Program (NFNG), where she plans and leads engaging, meaningful activities for immigrant women. Through her leadership, participants are encouraged to form friendships, practice English, and learn about life in Calgary and Canada. Her genuine care and warmth shine through in everything she does.

Even five years into her volunteer role, Pauline continues to be surprised and inspired by the women in her group. They often challenge stereotypes and bring unexpected insights, keeping every session dynamic and rewarding. She delights in the sense of community the women build together, how they encourage one another, share laughter, and lift each other up.

Pauline values the spontaneity that arises in their gatherings. What starts as a simple plan often transforms organically, driven by participants’ questions and ideas. She has learned to embrace this flexibility, allowing conversations to flow naturally and meaningfully.

Creating a safe and welcoming space for the women to speak and share is one of Pauline’s greatest joys. Watching participants grow, especially those who begin as shy or reluctant to speak, into confident and brave individuals is, in her words, “a beautiful thing to witness.” She’s especially moved when women feel so at home that they begin inviting others to join the group.

Volunteering has even shaped Pauline personally. She says it has taught her patience, learning to wait, to listen, and to give space instead of always filling in the silence. Her experience is a testament to how volunteering can not only impact others but transform the volunteer as well.

Pauline has had a meaningful and lasting impact on NFNG through her warm presence, dedication, and strong sense of community. Her genuine enjoyment in connecting with people creates a welcoming atmosphere where clients feel comfortable, valued, and motivated to participate
