Nazeela Monfared is originally from Iran and brings with her a lifetime of experience shaped by connection, curiosity, and service. After more than 25 years in the airline industry, Nazeela retired having fulfilled a lifelong love of travel, exploring countries and cultures across the globe. In the years that followed, she divided her time between Canada and Iran before eventually choosing to make Canada her permanent home.

Nazeela’s commitment to community found a natural home at CIWA. As a volunteer with Grandma’s Kitchen, she played a vital role in fostering connection among seniors by organizing group discussions, social outings, coffee gatherings, and seasonal celebrations. Under her leadership, these programs evolved into vibrant, welcoming spaces where relationships flourished and individuals felt truly seen and supported.

When funding for the Seniors Social Club came to an end, Nazeela’s dedication did not. She continued supporting seniors independently, helping them navigate essential services, accompanying them to medical appointments, and encouraging participation in wellness activities such as swimming, Zumba, and yoga. Her care extended far beyond programming; it was rooted in genuine compassion and presence.

Reflecting on her journey, Nazeela shares, “CIWA is a university for me. I learn a lot from here.” Through her experiences as both a client and a volunteer, she has gained invaluable knowledge and a deep appreciation for the diversity of women she has met. She finds great joy in learning about different traditions, cultures, foods, and forms of traditional dress, seeing each story as an opportunity to grow and connect.

Nazeela speaks openly about the challenges newcomer women often face upon arriving in Canada. Many leave behind their families, careers, friendships, and possessions, only to encounter cultural adjustment, harsh weather, isolation, language barriers, and limited awareness of their rights and freedoms. Through her close relationships with newcomer women, she has witnessed how many feel they “lose themselves” during this transition. Nazeela embraces the role of a guide—a “way finder”—helping women rediscover confidence, belonging, and direction.

Even if it’s a tiny difference, it’s enough for me. It’s really good. Volunteering is a win-win game.
