Michelle Young, born in Zimbabwe and raised in South Africa, has called Canada home for over 30 years. After living in Vancouver, she and her family eventually settled in Calgary. With a professional background spanning over 25 years in the oil and gas sector, Michelle retired and sought meaningful volunteer opportunities. As an immigrant herself, she was keen to mentor and support newcomers, which led her to the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA).

” I was searching for a way to give back and make a difference in the lives of other immigrants,” Michelle shared. “When I discovered the New Friends and Neighbourhood Groups (NFNG) Program, I knew I had found the perfect opportunity.”

Michelle’s love for research and her passion for sharing knowledge are evident in her role. She meticulously prepares and delivers activities that enhance learning and stimulate lively conversations among participants. When asked what excites her about facilitating, Michelle humbly mentioned, “I have no teaching background, but I’m glad that I can develop meaningful activities that cater to everyone, regardless of their diverse backgrounds and English levels.” Her commitment to inclusivity shines through, as she seamlessly works with large groups and co-facilitators, creating a productive and welcoming environment.

Michelle has gone above and beyond by proactively researching community resources to support immigrant women in their integration into life in Calgary. Through her volunteer work with other immigrant service agencies, she has gained a wealth of information which she actively shares. Clients have learned about valuable resources and support available in the city. Michelle tirelessly provides assistance and information to those in need.

Her dedication earned her the title of Volunteer of the Month. Staff further lauded her efforts, saying, “Michelle wholeheartedly embraced our NFNG objective to ‘make new friends.’ She actively encourages participants to exchange contact details and set up social groups that meet outside of our scheduled NFNG meetings. This has enabled participants to build a lasting support network that extends beyond our program.”

In her free time, Michelle enjoys exercise, hiking, pickleball, and occasionally tennis. Her commitment to the community and her passion for helping others continue to make a lasting impact on the lives of immigrant women in Calgary.
