Born and raised in Bangladesh, Iffat built her foundation in journalism and communication, earning her Master of Social Science (MSS) in Media Studies and Journalism. Before moving to Calgary in 2021, she worked in the field of journalism, which sharpened her curiosity, discipline, and love for people’s stories. Now, while working in security, she’s preparing to take on a new challenge: pursuing her lifelong dream of joining the police force.
In 2023, Iffat joined CIWA’s Immigrant Girls, Boys and More (IGBM) Program, bringing her enthusiasm and compassion to the world of youth mentorship. Since then, she has become a valued part of the team, guiding her mentee’s academic journey and supporting summer camps with energy and kindness.
Though she was initially hesitant to mentor, Iffat quickly realized she had something valuable to offer. She took time to learn how to communicate with youth, understand their interests, and build meaningful relationships. In doing so, she discovered how much volunteering can teach.
Volunteering is rewarding. People know you are there and believe in the cause.
This summer, Iffat truly shone during a group fitness session she facilitated for youth. Her ability to connect, motivate, and make everyone feel comfortable transformed the activity into more than just exercise. It became a moment of confidence and joy for the participants.
Iffat is creative, passionate, welcoming, understanding, encouraging, and responsive. She truly loves what she does, which was amazing to see.
Iffat expressed deep gratitude to CIWA for giving her the chance to teach fitness to newcomers—a role that blends her love for wellness and her desire to help others thrive. Recognizing the barriers many face in staying active, she works to make health and fitness approachable and empowering.
We want to nominate Iffat because it was so nice to see her in her element of fitness. We could see her passion and drive. Working with youth is not easy, but Iffat makes it look effortless. She has a great personality that is very inviting and made all of the youth feel comfortable despite the discomfort of exercising in front of others. We think now is a great time to give her the flowers she deserves.
Outside of volunteering, Iffat’s adventurous spirit takes her to new heights. She enjoys bungee jumping, obstacle courses, cliff diving, snorkeling, and more. Her fearless approach to life mirrors the confidence and determination she brings to her volunteer work.
We are so grateful for Iffat’s dedication, enthusiasm, and the positive impact she continues to make in the lives of youth. Her story reminds us that volunteering is more than giving; it’s also about growing, learning, and inspiring others along the way.
