At the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association (CIWA), we are honored to work alongside remarkable individuals like Hema, whose journey embodies the transformative power of volunteering and community spirit.

Born and raised in India, Hema holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and devoted her early years to raising her children. In 2007, she and her husband moved to Canada to be closer to their adult sons, embracing a new chapter in life. With a deep belief in helping others, Hema quickly became an active volunteer with various organizations in Calgary, always eager to make a difference.

Her connection with CIWA began through a community presentation that introduced her to the organization’s wide array of services. As a client, Hema experienced firsthand the positive impact of CIWA’s programs, which inspired her to actively participate in social programs for seniors. Her enthusiasm and commitment did not go unnoticed—by 2023, CIWA staff invited her to take on a formal role as an official volunteer

Hema is passionate and sincere about her work for people. She is also friendly, kind, and a true leader. She portrays an excellent commitment to serving people. In all her volunteer roles she works with soulful dedication

Hema now plays a vital role in two CIWA initiatives: Grandma’s Kitchen and the Supports for Immigrants and Refugees with Mental Health and Addiction Issues Project. Her passion for connecting people has brought many new clients into these programs from the community.

As the head chef at Grandma’s Kitchen, Hema generously shares her culinary skills while fostering friendships and cultural exchange among senior immigrant women. This program empowers participants by enhancing self-esteem, promoting healthy living, and helping them adapt to life in Canada through shared experiences like English conversation practice and learning multicultural recipes.

In addition, Hema contributes significantly to the Supports for Immigrants and Refugees with Mental Health and Addiction Issues Project, which provides culturally sensitive support for individuals facing mental health challenges. Every second Tuesday, she takes on a leadership role by interpreting invitations in Hindi and Punjabi, guiding clients to CIWA events, and ensuring they feel welcomed and supported.

Hema’s dedication extends far beyond her formal roles. Her sincere approach to building connections has created a ripple effect within the community, inspiring others to get involved and seek support through CIWA’s programs. Her efforts exemplify the power of volunteerism in fostering inclusivity and resilience among immigrant communities.

Hema finds immense joy in volunteering, describing it as a source of purpose and fulfillment.

She takes great pride in knowing that her efforts make a tangible difference in the lives of others. Living by the belief that “small changes make a big impact,” Hema derives deep satisfaction from helping women navigate challenges. As she puts it: “I am happy, surrounded by good people, and constantly learning new things.” Through her volunteer work, Hema feels that her confidence, time management, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills have all flourished.

Outside of volunteering, Hema embraces her love for old Bollywood music and dancing to Punjabi beats—making time for these joyful hobbies whenever possible.

We are proud to celebrate Hema as an integral part of CIWA’s mission to empower immigrant women and their families. Her story reminds us that even small acts of kindness can lead to profound change—one connection at a time.
