Carmen’s journey is one of resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to community. Born and raised in Cuba, she built a strong foundation in civic service with a Bachelor’s Degree in Economic Sciences and a Diploma in Foreign Trade. In 2021, Carmen and her family embraced a new chapter by moving to Calgary, bringing with her not just professional expertise, but also a heart determined to give back.
Just months later, in early 2022, Carmen was introduced to CIWA through her local library. Without hesitation, she stepped into the Volunteer Program and instantly became a vital part of the CIWA family. From the very beginning, her passion for supporting women shone brightly, and she quickly became involved in multiple programs and initiatives.
Whether offering interpretation, helping at events, or supporting programs like Pursuit of Happiness and Girls Culture Club, Carmen has been an anchor of kindness and dedication. Her joy in volunteering radiates through every role she takes on.
Volunteering is a great way to learn about society, new people, new places, improve your skills, practice empathy, and so much more
Her time at CIWA has not only allowed her to give, but also to grow. She has strengthened her communication skills, learned to express herself more confidently, and discovered new appreciation for diversity and cultural connection.
Carmen has had a positive and meaningful impact on CIWA clients. Her clear communication and commitment to quality ensured that important information was accessible to clients with language barriers. She has made our services more inclusive and culturally responsive
Carmen continues to dream of pursuing a career in social work, fueled by her belief in empowering women and building inclusive communities. Outside of volunteering, she finds joy in dancing, reading, spending time with friends, and immersing herself in the beauty of the sea.
She is endlessly patient, deeply compassionate, and brings a joyful energy that uplifts everyone around her. Even after exams or long study sessions, Carmen would show up with consistency and care. She goes above and beyond, proving her devotion to helping others thrive. That kind of selflessness is rare and inspiring.
Carmen’s story reminds us that volunteering is not just about giving, it’s also about growing, connecting, and creating ripples of impact that touch countless lives. At CIWA, she has become a beacon of dedication, empathy, and hope.
