Meet Abiodun, Team Lead of the Family Resource Network – Home Visitation Spoke: The Face of CIWA for the month of January.

“Abi has always been a great colleague, mentor, and leader. She embodies the values of CIWA in her work with clients as well as with colleagues. She not only empowers clients but also empowers other staff members to do the same, providing her expertise, help, and support when needed.” – CIWA Staff

Abiodun brings nearly a decade of experience in Nigeria’s education sector as an early childhood educator and middle and high school teacher. Her commitment to nurturing young minds extended beyond the classroom, as she mentored vulnerable youths and helped them find purpose and achieve their goals. This dedication earned her the 2017 Inspirational Educator Award in Nigeria, an achievement she holds close to her heart.

Immigration Journey

Abiodun immigrated from Nigeria, facing the challenge of finding a sense of belonging while adjusting to life as a first-time parent in a new country. She overcame these hurdles by immersing herself in community resources, volunteering, and connecting with others who shared similar journeys.

Impact at CIWA

With over six years of experience working at CIWA, her dedication to her role is evident in every aspect of her work. “Every moment has been deeply fulfilling,” she shares, appreciating the profound sense of purpose that working at CIWA brings. She recalls a particularly impactful moment while facilitating a group session for parents and toddlers aged 18 to 36 months.

“It was incredible to watch parents connect, share their stories, and realize they were not alone in their journey as newcomers and parents,” Abiodun shares. “The session created a safe space for them to exchange experiences, offer mutual support, and build lasting relationships.” – Abiodun Odueke

Message to Immigrant Women

To immigrant women, girls, and their families, Abiodun offers words of encouragement: “Embrace your journey with courage and resilience. The challenges you face today will become the foundation of your strength tomorrow. No matter how overwhelming it feels, know that support and resources are available to help you succeed.”

Abiodun’s Advocacy

Abiodun’s commitment to community service extends beyond her professional role. She serves as a council member on the National Advisory Council on Early Learning and Childcare, advocating for equitable access and inclusive policies. Her unique perspective as an immigrant, Black Muslim, and mother of a child with additional needs enriches her contributions for equitable access and inclusive policies including the implementation of the $10-a-day childcare program.

Creativity, Family, and Cultural Values

Outside of work, Abiodun channels her creativity into dancing and decorating spaces, particularly enjoying the creation of functional and calming environments that inspire children’s growth. She also cherishes quality time with her family, finding creative ways to bond through themed game nights and simple, memory-making moments.

Fluent in English and Yoruba, Abiodun shares a favorite phrase that encapsulates her approach to life: “Ọmọlúàbí ni mi,” which translates to “I am a person of integrity.” This beautiful reminder to live with kindness, honesty, and respect guides her in everything she does.

Abiodun’s dedication to community service, coupled with her professional expertise, makes her a valuable asset to CIWA and the broader immigrant community in Calgary.
