Originally from China, Yvette How and her family moved to Canada in 2022, after spending two years in the Philippines. She previously worked as a teacher and has her master’s degree in English Literature.

Yvette’s story with CIWA began one day while riding the C-train where she found an advertisement and after exploring the company’s website it wasn’t long until she was inspired to get involved. Wanting “an opportunity to give back and to learn as much about Canadian culture as possible.”, Yvette decided to give back by volunteering, where she brings her great strength and zest to support CIWA’s many programs.

Yvette volunteers with CIWA’s Everyday English for Seniors program, where she provides in-class support to a group of Chinese-speaking seniors. Using her teaching background and knowledge of the Chinese language Yvette is able to provide unique and catered assistance.

Yvette has been great in helping our senior English language learners become comfortable in their learning process. Yvette works with a group of Chinese seniors, and given that she speaks the language, they feel at ease. They know that their concerns will be listened to, without being lost in translation

CIWA Staff

Yvette continues gaining a deeper appreciation for diverse cultures, sports, fundraising initiatives and more through her support of numerous special events. Yvette’s joy found in volunteering has gone to not only change the lives of those she helps, but also her own, finding great personal growth. Yvette has found new confidence, communications/interpersonal skills, and has overcome various challenges all in her pursuit of helping others.

Yvette is constantly taking the opportunity to develop professionally as a teacher and is noted as, “learning new skills through her leadership with the classes”. She is grateful for, and heavily values the chance to hone and refine her teaching techniques in a supportive and inclusive environment at CIWA. Recently, Yvette received her TESOL certificate and is excited to apply her newly acquired skills.

Staff praise Yvette by noting how her contributions to the programs for senior clients have impacted their integration into Canada greatly noting, “While learning a new language presents challenges at any age, it becomes particularly formidable for older individuals. Her consistently supportive and encouraging approach significantly enhances our seniors’ experience.”

Yvette’s devotion to lead her classes all while maintaining her full-time employment, as well as her thorough understanding of CIWA’s mission have greatly positively impacted CIWA in addition to the overall experience of its senior clients.

Outside of her amazing work at CIWA, Yvette can be found finding social opportunities to make new friends, learning as much as possible about Calgary and finding new volunteer opportunities.

Yvette’s unwavering devotion and true passion for volunteer work and helping others, combined with her personal goals of education about Canada as well as different cultures, have combined to demonstrate why she is an outstanding representation of what CIWA is. CIWA is proud to have her teach at its programs where she continues to make a difference every day.
