When you give or fundraise

You’re not just supporting a program.
You’re showing up for a girl who’s
ready to lead.
You’re telling her:

I see you. I believe in you. I’m here for you.

I want to be Here For Her

When Cecilia Xu moved from China to Canada at just nine years old, she was shy, unsure of her place, and hesitant to share her cultural roots. Today, at 23, she’s a neuroscience student at the University of Calgary, a passionate mental health advocate, and a proud Change Leader.

Cecilia’s journey through CIWA’s Change Leaders program helped her turn personal challenges into purposeful action. “I’ve struggled with mental health myself,” she shares. “It’s what led me to study neuroscience—and to want to make a real impact.”

Through the program, Cecilia launched a mental wellness event specifically for single mothers—many of whom face isolation, stress, and limited support. “I wanted to give these women what they often go without: a day just for them,” she says.

Her event included professional speakers, traditional Chinese medicine practices, peer sharing circles, yoga, and something crucial: childcare. “I wanted to create space for them to truly focus on themselves without worrying about their kids.”

Though turnout was smaller than expected, Cecilia discovered something deeper. “I learned that leadership isn’t about perfection—it’s about taking action. Even a single moment of relief or connection can be transformative for someone.”

The experience also transformed Cecilia. “Before Change Leaders, I had never led a project from start to finish. I used to only support others’ ideas—this time, it was mine. Now I know I can do it. And I want to keep doing it.”

From shy newcomer to mental health champion, Cecilia’s story is a powerful example of what happens when young women are trusted to lead.

“Change Leaders gave me the confidence, tools, and mentorship I needed to believe in myself—and make a difference.”
