Sudeshna and her husband moved to Calgary from India one year ago. Prior to moving here, she earned a PhD in Computer Science and Engineering and was previously employed as an Assistant Professor for several years. She is proud of recently obtaining employment where she is back in the classroom teaching computers once again.
Sudeshna heard about CIWA through many people in her community and through a referral by another agency in the city. She was keen to become a volunteer in order to be engaged and active during her settlement, become more integrated, and to help her gain employment. Sudeshna began volunteering with CIWA mid-2024. She has provided key support on reception and has been a great support in CIWA’s computer classes.
Sudeshna’s love of helping shines and she ensured she gave best every single time she came to volunteer. She enjoyed listening to the clients’ stories and marveled at their diversity: from cultures, languages, backgrounds, needs, to education levels and more. She learned a lot through listening to them and felt proud that she could direct them to the right staff member in order for them to receive proper support.
“I appreciated the incredible support I received from CIWA staff and how included I felt. Whether it was the trust given to accomplish different tasks, the generosity of gifts, advice, and more, I genuinely felt that I was a part of a team. Volunteering gave me hope and opened doors.” – Sudeshna Mondal
Sudeshna also added that she learned many soft skills, such as communication and active listening. She indicated that volunteering was a great way to engage with society and feel like she was actively making a difference. She admitted that she found a way to feel useful and help others in meaningful ways.
“Sudeshna is dedicated, professional, and has strong communication skills. She not only demonstrates a deep understanding of our programs, but also plays a vital role in engaging with clients, making them feel supported and heard. Her assistance to the administrative team has been invaluable, as she consistently steps in when needed and ensures smooth operations. Her ability to connect with clients and provide meaningful support.” – CIWA Staff
CIWA staff says that Sudeshna is an invaluable volunteer. She consistently supports clients in classes, always offering her assistance with a smile and respect. Her deep knowledge and ability to communicate made a big difference, and even her emails are impressive.
Sudeshna’s hobbies include listening to music and learning new things.
