Presa is currently in her third year studying Political Science at the University of Calgary, bringing both academic insight and lived experience to her work as a volunteer. As the daughter of immigrant parents, she witnessed her family’s settlement journey in Canada and saw firsthand how newcomer youth navigate the education system. These early observations stayed with her and ultimately inspired her to begin volunteering, motivated by a desire to offer guidance and support to others facing similar challenges. Reflecting on her journey, she describes the experience as coming full circle—what she once observed, she now actively contributes to in a meaningful and positive way.
Over the past two years, Presa has been a dedicated mentor in both the Youth Mentorship Program and the Pathways to Success Program. Her commitment is evident in the consistent, thoughtful support she provides to her mentees. Known for her reliability and patience, she often goes beyond expectations, taking extra time to tailor her approach and ensure each mentee receives the personalized guidance they need to succeed.
Through her volunteer experience, Presa has developed a deeper sense of empathy and presence. She has learned the importance of truly listening rather than simply responding, allowing her to better understand the unique perspectives and challenges of the youth she supports. These experiences have helped her grow more patient and compassionate, strengthening her ability to build meaningful connections. She finds fulfillment in sharing practical tools and knowledge that can positively shape her mentees’ futures.
For Presa, trust is at the heart of mentorship. She values the openness of the clients she works with and appreciates the willingness they show in building genuine connections. Some of the most rewarding moments come from knowing she has made a difference, even in small ways—helping to ease someone’s day or offering reassurance when it is needed most. Those moments, she notes, are what make her own day brighter.
Her impact has not gone unnoticed. Staff highlight the meaningful role she plays in fostering strong, trusting relationships with her mentees, supporting their personal growth, confidence, and progress toward educational and career goals. Her patience, flexibility, and ability to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment have strengthened the mentorship experience and contributed to positive outcomes for clients. Through her dedication, Presa continues to embody CIWA’s commitment to empowering individuals through connection, guidance, and care.
Presa is highly patient and shows remarkable perseverance, particularly in working with mentees who may require additional support or engagement, ensuring they feel understood and supported. Despite being a busy university student, she has continued to prioritize her mentorship role, showing a strong sense of responsibility and a genuine desire to give back to the community. She has also expressed her willingness to continue mentoring in the upcoming cohort, reflecting her passion for supporting others and contributing to the program’s success
Presa thoroughly enjoys supporting youth as a mentor and hopes to continue doing so in the coming months and years.
In her free time, Presa enjoys reading, Rainbow Loom, puzzles, and more.
