Duaa was born and raised in Palestine, where she worked as a translator with United Nations. She later moved to the US and earned her Master’s in TESOL and Linguistics. After completing her studies, she returned to Palestine to teach at a local university. In 2014, Duaa and her family made a significant move to Canada.
Duaa’s journey into volunteerism began when people on transit and in public places sought her recommendations. She soon found herself providing interpretation and support to immigrant women in her community. This experience sparked her curiosity about helping others in a more structured environment that could offer privacy and boundaries. An internet search led her to CIWA.
In 2021, Duaa graduated from a CIWA program, Labour Market Bridging for Volunteers: Interpretation and Translation. Since then, has been a steadfast volunteer interpreter. Volunteering in this role provides an immediate sense of fulfillment for Duaa. She explains that while some roles take time to see their impact, as an interpreter, the difference she makes is tangible and rewarding right away.
Duaa credits CIWA with contributing to her sense of identity. She feels deeply grateful for the opportunity to be the voice of those in need, recognizing it as a mutually enriching experience. She values the trust her clients place in her, especially when it comes to maintaining their privacy, and is truly honored by this responsibility. She adds that volunteering helps keep her resume active and current.
