On February 16, 2018 Project Tibet Society, under the leadership of Nima Dorjee, hosted a celebratory event that marked the successful resettlement of close to 1000 Tibetan refugees in Canada. The event was held in conjunction with a Tibetan New Year celebration with many resettled families in attendance. CIWA was presented a certificate of appreciation to mark the wonderful partnership with Project Tibet Society. Best wishes to all Tibetan families!
The Shoe Project
CIWA has partnered with The Shoe Project in Calgary for the past two years. On January 21, 2018 The Shoe Project performed at the Studio Bell, National Music Centre in Calgary with several CIWA clients sharing their immigration story through a pair of shoes. The audience of 350 Calgarians along with The Honourable Lois E. Mitchell attended the event and enjoyed an evening rich with experience, passion, humour and fun, as twelve immigrant women eloquently presented their immigration experiences of coming to Canada. Youth Forum On February 15, 2018 CIWA celebrated its sixth annual Youth Forum event in collaboration with The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth at the Calgary Marlborough Community Association. This year’s event theme was “Daughters Today, Leaders Tomorrow.” Youth Forum provides a platform for Youth Mentorship Program participants to promote diversity and cross-cultural understanding and share their perspective on multiculturalism, tolerance and citizenship. Youth Forum was attended by over a thousand community members including children, youth and parents. Bloemraad; Award Winner Asra Khan; Award Winner Tina Guo; Daughters Day Jury Chair and CIWA Board Director Zabeda Yaqoob At this year's Youth Forum, four young and exceptional women were bestowed Daughters Day Awards.This award celebrates the lives, contributions and achievements of daughters based on an appreciation of gender equality in our society. Recipients were selected by a jury comprised of four CIWA Board Directors named Alice Lam, Jade Duong, Ranju Shergill and Zabeda Yaqoob. The awards were generously sponsored by Gerda R. Bloemraad, former CIWA Board Chair and Shirley Turnbull, current CIWA Board Director. Electronic Recycling Association One of CIWA’s Modular Training Program clients was keen on getting a job and improving her life in Canada. CIWA reached out to Electronic Recycling Association (ERA) a non-profit organization that fosters better community by reducing electronic waste and helping the non-profit sector to achieve excellence through the provision of technology. On January 22, 2018 ERA donated a laptop to CIWA. The laptop will not only help the client find a stable job, keep in contact with her family but will also assist her children complete school work. |
