Welcome to the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association's bi-monthly Grapevine Newsletter! CIWA's 35th Anniversary Gala is coming!
The event will be an evening of celebration with funders, corporate partners and community leaders in recognition of CIWA’s work and achievements over the last 35 years.
CIWA is pleased to announce three new initiatives
Digital Technology is a project funded by Calgary Learns that will enhance the digital technology skills and awareness of low literacy clients. CIWA staff will be developing 4 new teaching units that will provide clients with the opportunity to develop skills in basic computing, touch screens, POS cash registers, kitchen displays, inventory scanners, barcode scanning and online payment software. Digital technology equipment will also be purchased to supplement the teaching modules and will be made available to community partners through a lending library. My Community My Home enables senior immigrant women to build their independence and cope with their settlement in Canada. The program serves senior immigrant women through group sessions that will be held all year round in 4 community locations in Calgary. Group sessions will be offered for 2 hours at each location twice a month. The program will focus on developing community support through community engagement, information sessions, inter-generational activities, mentorship opportunities and hands on projects. Free childcare is available. Inclusion for Diversity is within Everyone’s Ability (IDEA) project provides support to immigrant parents of children with disabilities. CIWA will be working in partnership with Pacekids and Between Friends to produce a specialized Cross Cultural Parenting manual to support these newcomer families.
CIWA is expanding and acquiring new space
CIWA is expanding! We have acquired 7,400 square feet of new space on the fourth floor of First Street Plaza. The new space will house our expanded LINC classes and our low-literacy employment division. We look forward to seeing clients, guests and visitors in our new space.
Ministerial visits to CIWA
CIWA has had ministerial visits this past month. On July 20, Terry Duguid, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Status of Women, visited CIWA to learn more about the programs and services that we offer to empower immigrant women.
Congratulations to CIWA's Links to Success Program Graduates!
On June 30th, CIWA hosted a graduation celebration for clients of Links to Success: Skills Enhancement and Internship for Young Immigrant Mothers. There were 12 clients who graduated from the program, 8 of which have found full-time employment at the following companies: Robert Half, The Staywell Manor Village, The Salvation Army, Minuteman Press, Institute for Stuttering Treatment and Research - University of Alberta, Good Start Daycare, CIWA and Westrock. We wish these ladies all the best in the future!
CIWA’s Youth Cultural Summer Camp
CIWA’s Youth Cultural Summer Camp was hosted from July 4 to August 10. The camp took place at Knox United Church with 25 participants. The camp focused on engaging newcomer girls with meaningful community engagement opportunities and activities throughout the summer months. In addition to CIWA’s Youth Cultural Summer Camp, CIWA hosted a photography camp from August 8 to August 18, in partnership with Anytx Community Arts. This camp will allow 17 immigrant girls to develop photography skills while exploring the themes of identity, self-esteem, positive messaging in the public, women in media and female empowerment. Youth are scheduled to showcase their work on August 25. The showcase will take place on the 2nd floor of CIWA from 2:30-3:45 pm. Everyone is welcome to join.
