Congratulations to CIWA's Matched Savings Circle Graduates

Nineteen women graduated from CIWA's Matched Savings Circle Program on November 17, 2017. These dedicated women have all worked very hard towards saving up for their chosen asset, including RESPs, medical/dental expenses and many others.

This project encourages immigrant youth and adult participants to embrace their new home, learn more about Canada, Canadian confederation and integrate into Canadian society. Participants will be engaged in activities such as field trips, a video production, and community presentations that celebrate the 150^th anniversary of Canadian confederation.

CIWA's United Way Fundraising Campaign

CIWA's United Way Fundraising Campaign was a great success this year! Thanks to the contributions and efforts of CIWA staff, board of directors, clients and volunteers as well as external stakeholders, CIWA raised a record amount in support of the United Way.

Last year, CIWA's Accessory Sale was a very popular event and this year we are proud to say that the sale was even bigger, drawing in clients, staff, volunteers and community members. CIWA was supported with external donations of rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, purses and many scarves.

CIWA's Inaugural Alumni Networking Event a success

CIWA hosted its very first Alumni Networking event on November 3 and it connected 30 CIWA alumni across all programs to a pool of current CIWA clients. The evening allowed for mixing and mingling and created connections between immigrant women who have successfully integrated into Canadian society and women who are just starting their integration journeys.

Client Profile: Low Literacy Modular Employment participant Saenmanee Arokha

Saenmanee (Manee) Arokha is from Thailand and came to Canada in June 2014. She landed a job as a cleaner in a food court in the city but was unable to keep her job as her English literacy skills were too low. Manee struggled and was very upset to lose her job. She enrolled in LINC classes to improve her English, through YWCA, and then was referred to CIWA's Low Literacy Modular Employment program. She is working towards obtaining her kitchen help certificate and was so enthusiastic about her class that she brought in an avocado salad recipe to share with her classmates. Manee hopes to continue to improve her skills so she can find employment.

Nominations open for CIWA's Daughters' Day Awards

Nominations are open for CIWA's Daughters' Day Awards. The awards, founded in Edmonton, celebrate the lives, contributions, and achievements of all daughters based on an appreciation of gender equity in our society. Recipients of the Daughters' Day Awards will be awarded at Youth Forum on February 4, 2017. Last year, three young and exceptional community builders were awarded Daughters' Day Awards and we look forward to celebrating new winners this year. More information is available online.
