CIWA receives Federation Literacy Award
On the occasion of International Literacy Day, September 8th, Canada's Premiers announced the recipients of the 10th annual Council of the Federation Literacy Award. The award celebrates outstanding achievement, innovative practice and excellence in literacy. It is presented to educators, volunteers, learners, community organizations, non-governmental organizations and businesses from all provinces and territories.
CIWA is honoured to be the 2014 recipient of the Federation Literacy Award for the province of Alberta. The award recognizes CIWA's decade long commitment to supporting low literacy immigrant families in the city of Calgary, in the areas of foundational, computer and employment literacy. Through these programs we are empowering immigrant families.
The award ceremony will take place on October 23rd, at the Edmonton Marriot, River Cree Resort. We look forward to celebrating this honour with community partners, supporters and fellow recipients.
CIWA participates in Daughters Day Edmonton
On September 6th, CIWA participated in Edmonton's Daughters Day celebration. The annual event highlights the importance of the daughters in our lives, regardless of age and raises awareness about gender discrimination as well as recognizes daughters who are making a significant contribution to their communities. CIWA's Director of Programs, Eva Szasz-Redmond presented a Daughters Day award to Laura Manickaraj, a Calgarian who has dedicated her life to living with people with developmental disabilities in L'Arche communities. Laura has been living with cancer for a number of years but her commitment to the lives of others often supersedes her own illness.
Daughters Day is coming to Calgary! CIWA is partnering with Daughters Day to join the initiative and host an event to increase awareness of gender discrimination and to recognize outstanding daughters in various fields in the city. We are excited to engage Calgarians in this project. More information to come.
United Way Campaign Kick Off
On September 4th, more than 50 CIWA staff participated in the United Way Campaign Parade Kick Off. The theme of the campaign this year was Superheroes again. CIWA donned capes and masks and got the crowd involved in the United Way Kick Off Parade. CIWA's United Way Campaign will launch in October with many fundraising activities and events in support of the United Way.
Staff Appreciation Day
CIWA staff enjoyed Staff Appreciation Day on August 11th, under the blazing sun at Heritage Park. The event was attended by 140 staff and celebrated the agency's accomplishments in serving immigrant families. The day was a fun day out for the staff of CIWA.
CIWA Youth Race and Summer Camp
The Civic Engagement and Youth Mentorship Programs successfully collaborated for the 4th annual CIWA Youth Race. A combination of 27 mentors and mentees enjoyed their day at Heritage Park on a park wide scavenger hunt along with station games and clues to follow along the way.
Youth Summer Camp took place on July 23. Youth participated in arts, crafts and discussions focused around self-esteem and community involvement. The camp wrapped up with an intergenerational talent show where youth and seniors put to display their talents with acts which included dancing, singing and poetry. This year, CIWA’s Youth and One on One counselling program also organized a summer camp for the community of Erinwoods. Fourteen girls enjoyed activities and field trips focused on empowerment and community involvement.
