Zabeda Yaqoob

Zabeda Yaqoob was born and grew up in England.  She worked there as a lawyer practicing in a number of different areas of law.  In her latter years she specialized in Family, Immigration, Child Protection law and Judicial Review.

Zabeda has a vast amount of experience dealing with culturally sensitive issues.  She has delivered training and mentoring in areas such as forced marriages, domestic violence, female genital mutilation and human and child trafficking. Having worked for a number of non-profit organizations in England with vulnerable children, adults and immigrants, she now intends to continue to use her skills and expertise to assist Albertans.

Having immigrated to Canada, Zabeda continued her legal career and is an active member of The Law Society of Alberta and also acts as the Director of Legal and Regulatory Affairs for a regulatory body in Alberta.

Zabeda has volunteered at Immigrant Services Calgary and at a women’s emergency shelter in Calgary. Zabeda continues to provide guidance to internationally trained lawyers relocating to Alberta and is appointed as a Designated Representative for the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.

“I understand from personal encounters that the immigration process can be an overwhelming experience, and for newcomers to Canada, it is often very difficult to navigate.  When immigrants do successfully arrive, they have the added challenge of integrating into society.  I volunteer’s with CIWA as CIWA understands these challenges, empowers these individuals and creates an amazing safe haven for women and immigrants to start a new journey in their lives”.
