Meet Samrawit. She is a volunteer with CIWA’s Family Resource Network Hub and is January’s Volunteer of the Month.

Samrawit Taeme is originally from Eretria, and she lived in Israel for 6 years. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Electrical Engineering and worked a variety of jobs before relocating to Calgary in 2015. She is passionate in supporting women find their voices.

Samrawit started volunteering at CIWA immediately after completing the Labour Market Bridging for Volunteers – Translation and Interpretation Program in 2020. Since then, she has been actively providing interpretation support in Amharic and Tigrinya. She currently provides interpretation services for staff and clients through CIWA’s Family Resource Network Hub. She says that volunteering in this role has provided her the unique opportunity to learn more about Calgary and life in Canada.

“Because of this, I am growing and learning as a woman.”

Samrawit has a passion to help and support women and thrives on helping them find their voices. She is thankful that she can be a voice for women who need help to be heard and understood. She finds joy in helping clients navigate through legal, medical, and school appointments and meetings with social workers.

Samrawit recognizes that volunteering is an important Canadian value. She is grateful for the opportunity to be involved in meaningful ways. She also enjoys meeting new people and sharing information with them as they settle in a new country.

Samrawit shows her commitment to serve others in every volunteering session. She goes above and beyond to support CIWA clients. She provides clear and timely communication and shares helpful feedback. She is also flexible to last-minute changes. Staff and clients are thankful for Samrawit’s dedication.

Samrawit thrives on being outside and spending quality time with her son.
