Calgary Immigrant Women's Association Receives 2013 Calgary Herald Christmas Fund
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! CIWA is delighted to announce that we are one of the recipients of the 2013 Calgary Herald Christmas Fund. We have received the funding to provide prevention of homelessness services through Find Me a Home Program.
The purpose of the Calgary Herald Christmas Fund is to raise awareness around critical social issues including hunger, homelessness, addiction, abuse and violence.
CIWA’s Find Me A Home Program assists multi-barriered immigrant/refugee women in escaping abusive situations by providing shelter and a safe environment for them and their children. It also aids clients with housing crisis situations such as evictions, or inability to amass damage deposits. Based on their unique needs, clients receive first language support and are referred to other CIWA and community programs. This holistic approach ensures at-risk women and their children obtain necessities, legal guidance, and referrals to health, counselling, employment and community services. Through the program, clients gain the skills and support needed to maintain independence and break away from potential homelessness.
Calgary Immigrant Women's Association is the top winner of Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life Literacy Innovation Award
We are proud to announce that CIWA is the top winner of the national ABC Life Literacy Award.
This prestigious award honours innovation in the development and delivery of outstanding adult and family literacy programs delivered by a community organization in Canada.
CIWA’s Low Literacy Modular Employment Program received $20,000 for raising the literacy and workplace skills of immigrant and refugee women. Our practical teaching modules focus on accessible employment that is tailored to English language proficiency, literacy skills, background experience, existing skill level and employment goals. This program also offers support for job search, interview preparation, resume development and job retention.
